THE ESSENTIALS

Key messages

  1. 01

Areas of particular importance for biodiversity are the starting point for where 30x30 happens, through both protected areas and OECMs. Protecting the right places helps achieve other targets.

  2. 02

Key Biodiversity Areas (KBAs) are the best available map of “areas of particular importance for biodiversity”, recommended by the AHTEG, but most remain only partially protected, or unprotected.

  3. 03

Establishing a KBA National Coordination Group in each country helps to drive a site identification process. This leads to better coordination between government, NGOs, Indigenous Peoples, and scientists, and supports the long term monitoring and conservation of the sites.
